AI is now entering the synchronous  process of dating and matchmaking

Intellectual qualities are now becoming the preserve of technology, not people. AI is a relatively new player in love industry, but it’s already being credited with extraordinary abilities. If we step to when you are looking for a date partner, you might have started with your the ask of ChatGPT, which also recommends “dating site/app” as its best option today.

This is how Dating, Matchmaking vs AI can be different or similar:

  • Matchmakers and AI (on dating sites/apps) can help you find a date, but whether the client actually connects is entirely up to the client.
  • A match is just a match; it’s not an acquaintance and doesn’t guarantee 100% compatibility. On Tinder, 63% of male users send a message within 5 minutes of matching, while only 18% of female users do the same [3].
  • Dating site/app algorithms operate based on the information you provide them; they essentially introduce your online persona to another online persona.
  • Matchmakers work based on the information you provide them, but as humans, they can also gather nonverbal information about you during a personal meeting.
  • Matchmakers can use AI (and this applies not only to dating sites) – apps for taking notes during Zoom meetings, video transcription, AI-integrated CRM databases, and more [4]. The quality of this use depends on both the quality and security of the technology, as well as the ethical use of it by matchmakers. The client is the only one who must consent to this combination of human and AI interactions.
  • AI can collect and use aggregated data to train its model. Your behavior can be compared to the aggregate behavior of other users of the site/app.
  • Your date can be equally excellent or disastrous, whether you meet through a matchmaker or through a dating site/app. Choosing your dating partner is a personal decision. In the case of a matchmaker, you will undergo a preliminary screening stage of a network of compatible options. With AI, you’ll need to invest your time and effort to help the model learn to your liking.
  • The matchmaker will strive to achieve your stated goal. The AI will try to match your pattern to achieve the maximum number of matches. If you state that you’re looking for a long-term relationship but present yourself as more of a casual fling, the matchmaker will recommend a dating coach. The AI will help you find several options with whom you have the most in common at the moment.
  • A matchmaker searches for a realistic request, which in this context can be compared to recruiting for an open position. AI searches broadly by keywords, behavior patterns, interests, and other characteristics.
  • AI offers a broad network of potential partners; the matchmaker’s network, however, depends solely on their social skills and existing network.
  • It’s entirely up to you, as the client, whether this will be a customized search or a broad selection of options.
  • Dating as a social interaction should adhere to ethical norms, which is more challenging with AI. A network of academics created the Ethical Dating Online project to explore the social impact of dating apps  [2].
